In Response To: Lava in the Marathon (Irritated)

: Any other ideas?

Slag works, and it's also plausible that the lava is a form of coolant for the Marathon's reactors, this would logically double as the ship's main source of heat for hot air and water, and would therefore have to be pumped throughout certain parts of the ship.

As for the layout of CSFS,C the only thing I could think of is it's some sort of engineering lab, in which the srtuctures are more educational for the ship's engineers than functionally practical. It's also possible that it's an unfinished or abandoned part of the ship, and the final intent of its design was never fleshed out.
