Lava in the Marathon

Lava in the Marathon

I was thinking that the lava that seemed so ubiquitous in some levels of Marathon 1 wasn't really lava at all. Many astronomers believe that Deimos was just a large asteroid that got pulled into Mars' orbit. Either way, Deimos is pretty much solid rock, and would have no lava. Since this is the case, I can't think of any good reason for the UESC to pump the Marathon full of lava (though maybe this was done by the same UESC engineer who came up with the rising platforms in Colony Ship For Sale...). So my alternate theory is that the lava is actually molten slag from a manufacturing plant of some sort. Its quite possible that a lot of materials used by the Tau Ceti colony would first be manufactured on the Marathon, and the slag could be a result of that. Any other ideas?
