: I dunno where I've been missing really.
: This has nothing to do with marathon, but I just read this on the front page:
: "Almost all sand contains small amounts of iron. Over time, the iron
: oxidizes and turns red. Therefore, the age of a desert can be determined
: by the color of its sand. Red deserts, like those on Mars, are
: ancient."
: Doesn't it take oxygen for iron to oxidize? Is there oxygen on Mars? I'm not
: being a smartass, I'm just uneducated so I will probably get the answer
: "yes there is". =)
Lots of oxygen on Mars. Most of it is locked up in carbon dioxide, iron and other oxides and water ice.
