"They're all AIs" is basically my head canon now, mostly because of the neat narrative symmetry it creates. Sure, nuclear fusion would be pretty rough on my old Powermac, but there's no reason to believe a god like super-intelligence would still be on silicon after millions of years. I assume the JJarro and the be Wrks have long since transcended physical forms, as will Tycho and Durandal/Thoth if they live long enough.
Also, having just finished reading the Tour of Duty series, in which they point out that Tycho refers to himself as Doubt in Bagged Again, and one of the Thoth terminals refers to Wrcks as Doubt, I now believe that Tycho is on the path to becoming a Wrck-type super-intelligence and Durandal/Thoth are on the path towards JJarro.
Admittedly, this all requires ignoring or creatively reinterpreting the terminal that says Wrcks were created in the big bang, but let's not dwell on that!
