Well, normally John has hand grenades and the grenade launcher in Halo Reach is similar in that the grenades bounce and roll around on the ground before going off like Tomb Raider 3, but as seen in my SPV3 LP here, certain assault rifles and battle rifles in that mod have Marathon style impact grenade launchers in them, so he could theoretically use those instead of frags.

His air control can't be easily adjusted while grenade jumping, though he can crouch to get slightly higher like Gordon Freeman can. Getting the Bandanna skull in Halo Anniversary was hell for me when I did it as it was my first grenade jump.

I found Marathon grenade jumping much easier, though grenade climbing with Marathon 2 physics is arguably harder than Halo grenade jumping.

John can also use overshields to protect himself further as his basic shield is only one layer as opposed to Marcus's two layers. Unlike Marcus/SO/MJOLNIR, John can't rocket jump easily as he just blows his own legs off, but he can achieve a similar effect by grenade jumping with the Sputnik skull in Halo 2.
