: What's your story?
I heard about Marathon in a Mac magazine (was it MacUser ?) back in 1993 I believe, but my computer did not have sufficient game power to play it, so I didn't do anything beyond trying the demo. In May 1994 my student's association bought a PowerMacintosh 6100. Back then, this was not top of the line but almost, and it featured the new ultra powerful PowerPC chip that could do just about anything ! (Compared to my 68030 at least.) Another magazine brought the new Marathon 2 demo at some point, and after going through it, I bought the game. That game was so popular : even Mac nay sayers of the time lined up to play ! Personally, I never got the time to finish the game at that time, and I only finished the game when I bought the Bungie Action Sack from Bungie's web site in 1998 when I finally bought a newer and more powerful Mac (the beige PowerMac G3, desktop version, after 7 years of using my Mac IIsi and much hesitation to buy another Mac because of the sad state of Apple Computers Inc). On this "dream machine", I played Marathon 1 and 2 but then stopped half way through Infinity, partly because of lack of time and partly because Mac OS X came along. Then, one day in March 2005, I heard about Aleph One. So I played again Marathon 1, 2 and finished Infinity. Then I played Tempus Irae a few months later. Last year I found Eternal Mk V... which I only had the time to finish last week ! :-D Needless to say, I'm not a real gamer, but I like the Marathon series because there is a semblance of a story, and the universe is actually fun to explore.
