There have been no changes to the software renderer; do you see the same framerate drop there? The changes to the OpenGL renderer are minimal, and only involve textures. Geometry, lighting, and clipping are unchanged.
Also, make sure you're not exceeding Forge's view distance limit (about 28 WU), and that your number of transparent lines is less than 30 or so.
