So why did the Arbiter have that name in the first place?
I think it's like the world of Middle-Earth. Tolkien came up with a lot of it while serving in the British army during World War II, and many literary critics of his day claimed it was a WWII allegory. I believe initially he said something in the affirmative to this, but later redacted that and said that it's not a specific allegory of anything, though it is a broad and deep story which implicitly comments on a many life issues, and so could be *applied* allegorically to many situations, World War II included.
Bringing this all back to Marathon: many of the characters I write in Eternal, Hathor especially, are written from my own point of view, with emotions that mirror those of my own from situations analogous to those the characters are facing. So you *could* say that all of Eternal is an allegory for, say, my own deep sense of guilt, duty, and destiny, or my self-hatred at the abomination of a being I have become, or my frequent desires to annihilate all humanity even though I know it won't accomplish anything good for me - but you'd be wrong. Not wrong that I feel that way, but wrong that Eternal is some sort of allegory meant to expound my own psychological issues. It's not. It's a fantasy story, which merely happens to *reflect* on some of those psychological issues. Different players will (hopefully) catch different things that click with their own personal experiences, and that's would be great. That's how good writing is supposed to work.
