Yeah actually they are both 'history of philosophy' classes, ancient and modern respectively.
My other class is intro to logic, which goes beyond even "I coud learn this from a book in one night" and on to "are there actually people who don't understand this naturally?" Evidently there are... which boggles my mind. I figured we'd be learning symbolic logic, in the sense of the symbols used to write logical formulae like math, but so far we're just going over pretty basic things that I thought would be obvious to anyone.
(The one exception there is that the system we're using is a little fscked up; the weird way they mean 'if-then' statements could be phrased using only 'and', 'or', and 'not' - i.e. "if P then Q" just means "not (P and not Q)" or "(not P) or Q" - and also doesn't mesh properly with the common usage of 'if-then' which is to imply a logical inference from one to the other, as in an argument, so they may as well not use conditionals like that at all).
