Actually, what happens is that when you finish the saved game level and proceed to the next level, you switch to the comparable level from whatever the default map is. When switching among Eternal marks, this is no problem since the map levels are compatible across marks - thus I was able to upgrade to Mark IV without any loss of gameplay. Still, I have a long way to go to get to the new stuff, by which time Mark V will undoubtedly be out.
