In Response To: PF Volunteers - Who is Mary Rose? (Steve Levinson)

: Although there are many things about this level that really bug me.

Except for the SLOW platforms that Steve discusses below, this is one of my favorite levels.

: My strategy for surviving this ambush is to
: lay down an extensive grid of mines so as to thin the ranks of the aliens,
: then to approach the compiler and to quickly retreat. You'll still have a
: lot of aliens to dispatch, but the mines will make this task much easier.
: Just be careful not to let an alien get too close to a mine that you're
: next to!

Though there is no guarantee of success, I like to activate all those enemies and circle them using the entire extent of that opening room. It might not look like there's enough room to manuever, and the player does have to learn to dodge enemies as they circle, but it is possible to defeat all those enemies without any ammo being used. Since I usually will end up with next to no shield left, I head for the 2x recharger first and then the PB.

: From here one
: can continue across and down a spiral staircase, landing back at the PB.

Did you notice that you can't go back up that staircase once you have descended it? I found that to be annoying, but it might have been planned that way.

: There are a lot of places to visit and many switches to flip and, frankly, I
: have no idea what each of the switches does or even which one's are
: necessary to completion of the scenario.

There are a total of three switches that are necessary to finishing the level. I enumerate them as Steve discusses them below.

: There are two well-lit alcoves we will pass - the second one contains a 2X
: shield recharger, so be sure to look for it.

Also at the top of those alcoves are two Compilers and a poly right after the alcoves that is supposed to trigger them. Why they do not activate is a mystery to me. I am glad they don't, but I am sure Matt will figure out why. :)

: I hate these
: rooms. Matt, couldn't you at least have the platforms descend a bit more
: rapidly?

Agreed. They rise fast enough, but descend ever so slowly. There is a "contracts slower" flag that is set. It might be satisfactory if Matt just removes that flag.

: use its teleporter to get back to the second ledge and then wait for it to
: rise again, at which point you can finally shoot the switch in this room.

This is the first switch that must be flipped.

: You'll need to shoot a switch at one point to continue your way around.

Although it IS possible to hop around the barricade that this switch activates, most players will want to use this switch. This is not one of the three though that I am enumerating.

: When you reach the farthest point, look back and you'll see a corridor
: leading to a switch.

This is the second switch that must be flipped.

: jump to it
: and flip first one and then another switch.

The first one of these switches is the third switch that must be flipped. However, it is useful to flip the other switch too as the door it opens allows the player a convenient pathway back to the high places.
