It's almost as if you'd be okay if Challenge : Levels were simply tacked on to the end of a single player campaign - : because then, getting to them was part of the ACCEPTABLE progress of the : game, rather than the UNACCEPTABLE "do this to earn that". And : yet, the only difference to the player would be WHEN they could get to : them! In fact - if they were tacked on to the end of the campaign, you'd : take even LONGER to get to them, because you can only progress linearly! I should note that this is the exact opposite of what my other post says, and I'm willing to bet Cody would agree that this is putting words in his mouth. Tacking on challenges to the end of a campaign as an unlockable is as almost as bad as requiring you to solve riddles to unlock them. The difference in that situation is that most developers make challenges (among other things) unlockable after the campaign because (i) they may spoil the story and (ii) the campaign tends to teach you the skills required to engage in these challenge levels. It's also hard to deny the fact that challenge levels after a campaign are usually tacked on. Still... In no way is the natural level progression related to unlockables. If we get that pedantic, then you may as well call completing an objective within a level a manner of unlocking the next... or jumping to hit a brick in order to unlock a mushroom. It's splitting hairs and really missing the point.
