Seriously, color plays a much larger part of IFF than you'd ever believe. More experienced players can certainly make the snap distinction between a Spartan and an Elite, but it's not a lot of fun for those players to constantly be pinged by a teammate that can't.

Invasion was only 1 round in the beta. When you make it two rounds, you switch sides but it's important to keep the same colors (for previously explained reasons). Internally for a while it was like this, and you end up with purple Spartans and green Elites. It looks silly, so we made the call to switch it to red & blue.

: because it's a Custom Game, not a matchmade one.

Color was part of team setup, which got very complicated and error-prone because of needing to support FFA, normal teams, and fireteam setup. That's why most of that stuff is hidden from the UI.
