I'm referring specifically to allowing : the players to keep their custom colors, rather than forcing olive-shades : on Spartans and blues, reds, and purples on Elites. We initially thought the same thing - so we tried it. Turns out different people use different cues for friend-or-foe identification, or rely on some cues more than others. Friendly fire incidents went up noticeably. Which is the same reason team colors are constant across rounds. Once you have it programmed into your brain "I'm red, shoot blue" it's hard to reverse quickly.
