It's the more important of the two, but your Arena rank shows that, if you're into that. An obscenely high Rank in Reach isn't something to brag or show off, it's (in most cases) a sign of how pathetic you are* for sitting there hour upon hour farming for Onyx commendations. Having your skill behind the scenes is better. Less inscentive and ability to cheat your way to the top. We've seen what happened in Reach's early days with the Challenge resets. They wanted a (then) high rank, and since they found an exploit, they CHEATED for the simple sake of a high rank, because due to the limit, it apparently meant something. It's all about incentive. If you're good, you're good. You'll beat others in Arena, and get your three months of Onyx. That's something you can brag about. Otherwise, who cares? *Not saying that high rank autamagically says that you're pathetic, I know a lot of people who are extremely high ranks (Snipe, Aloysius, etc.) who actually have skill, and just got there because they play all the time. It's the people who seek out any tiny commendation, or idle in Firefight for hours that are sad. All over a digital rank that means nothing.
