I'd be fine with "new" content such as Skirmishers or Brutes in the later time period, as long as they're used sparingly. Mostly, I agree with you on that the story should be kept as unchanged as possible, but I do think a remake could use some of the gameplay elements (ie. enemies, weapons, abilities) introduced in the later games. However, I certainly hope 343i will pay greater attention to their armor designs in their games than in the novel covers. Shouldn't be too hard, considering how Bungie already came up with a graphically updated Mk. V. Thinking about "filling in blanks", a level set on the Forerunner ship would be cool. At least if it was like it was described somewhere. Wasn't it supposed to have man cannons and driving and something? Also I wouldn't mind if they added the Forerunner Tank level to Halo 2. Overall, adding cut content like that would be something to consider when making a remake. Also, a First Strike game would be awesome if done right. It would inevitably have to take liberties with the novel for the sake of level design and flow, but as long as the core story would be kept intact, I'd be fine with it. And I certainly wouldn't mind if they retconned the time-warping properties of the crystal away.
