lol, as far as Rtas goes, its not really a matter of doctrine at all as I see it.
Just a case of not really seeing him as the best qualified for the job. To be effective in any role, you need training and experience, and commanding a fleet of ships is a whole different thing from commanding squads of ground units.
So far removed from each other, its just difficult for me to consolidate realistically.
To be good at something you have to specialise.

I suppose my gripe is that its a bit too 'Hollywood' in suggesting someone just automatically knows not only how to do something, but how to do it well.

Unless of course he's more a figurehead, ala Colonel Blair in Wing Commander 4 being put in charge of a Borderworlds Carrier despite only being a fighter pilot.
He didn't really know what he was doing of course and it was his experienced XO that really worked things out, but still respecting the chain of command as established.
