If she arrives back to Earth with more info on what's going on than anyone on Earth, why wouldn't Lord Hood give her command of that outpost to mount a defense?

Her assigned ship, In Amber Clad was destroyed. The Forward Unto Dawn undoubtedly already has a commanding officer and yet Miranda was given command of that from Lord Hood to travel to the Ark. I see these both as the same situation.

I see what you mean by Apologetics. I prefer to think of it as Halo: Justifications. Canon is what it is whether we personally like a data point or not. I prefer to justify the facts rather than belabor their troublesome inclusion when it's inconsistent or inconvenient. Keeps me stress-free. :)
