When one hits start while playing as Buck, there is an image of a rearing lion. I don't know if there are other animals present when playing as other characters (I'd research this further, but it's something my roommate noticed and showed to help me gather evidence, and he's playing as Buck right now) have animals in their start menus, but that's one possibility. Also, the three three beasts may be seen perhaps in the main characters of Sadie's story. While I haven't collected and examined all of the audio logs, but Sadie could represent the wolf, being alone as she is, Mike, the ex-cop being her courageous savior, and the leopard another character I have yet to identify. My roommate also posited that Sadie could be some sort of equivalent to Beatrice, in that the Rookie recieves enlightenment from her disembodied voice (in D.I. Beatrice speaks or sings from Heaven; in ODST Sadie speaks through audio logs provided by Vergil at terminals).
