This would make sense in the case of time passing from Nov 17th to travel to the Ark and then back again and it be around March of the next year. The Chief didn't enter cryo until the portal had collapsed and that was presumably around March, 2553 on Earth. So if he could stay up and about out of cryo, I'd assume the trip was only a matter of days at the most through the portal while 3+ months have elapsed on Earth.
