In Response To: Re: Who else thinks the Halo 3: ODST ODST is femal (Fragclone) : 1. word dude: fingers. if thats a woman, then she must be masculine. but : seriously i highly doubt it.. still the fingers are too large to be : feminine You ought come into my dojo sometime. Some of the girls we have enrolled there...they make lumberjacks look dainty. And I'll tell you what, when you get a straight palm strike to the solar plexus, it really makes no difference is that hand is male or female; it hurts nonetheless. Also, Portal was immensely popular and BOTH main characters were female (ok, one was a female-sounding machine with machine PMS, but whatever). The player-controlled character was not only female, but a Hispanic female with frizzy hair and average bust size. And you know what? I've never felt more immersed whilst playing a female character. In fact, Portal was one of the most immersive games I've ever played in my life. I think Bungie saw this, recognized that, in gaming, 'female' doesn't necessarily have to equal 'stripper' and toyed with the idea of the ODST being female. Do I think the Rookie is female? I don't know. I'm kind of hoping it is though. Also, a note to game publishers: I don't find the 36DD, hourglassed, pool-noodle lipped, high-heeled, nearly-naked female image attractive. At all. I find that I can't trust a woman who looks like that, and trust is essential to buying into any primary gaming character. I find the 'average' girl-next door aesthetic much more appealing and attractive, both visually, physically, and psychologically. It not only gives a more realistic image of a living person but also gives us a more approachable face that we can ultimately find easier to relate to. Believe me, I'd rather date Alyx from Half-Life 2 any day over Lara Croft or the LeeLoo wannabe from Heavenly Sword. And if I'm gonna play a girl in a video game, she needs to be someone I can realistically see myself either dating or befriending. Immersion is a very real thing and it needs very real people to be effective.
