Chief's Dead in 'Heaven?' Well... sorta!

In Response To: Re: Means vs. Will (Free Weights) In a way you are closer to the truth then you think... :-D While Chief certainly isn't dead, I think Bungie was drawing from a very ancient form of storytelling. Several times Bungie has referred to him as a 'Universal Hero,' an archtype that's been known and spoken of throughout human history. (This might remind some of Joseph Campbell's writing on hero stories, I'm not sure if he specifically applies... I couldn't find anything to link to about him or the topic, but, moving on.) I can't think of any specific ones off hand, but many, many ancient hero stories have the protagonist die and/or 'leave' the world, entering some sort of 'enshrined' state of bliss/nirvana. Remember when Frodo, at the end of LOTR, decides to embark with Gandalf and the elves to the West? It's a lot like that. 'Riding off into the sunset' is another way to say this. Unless 19 years later, Spielberg and Lucas decide to drag your fedora-wearing ass back into commercial stardom. But I'm getting OT. :-P : I thought that the ring never actually ended up "firing" but ended : up just exploding when it was supposed to go off, something like a gun : firing with something lodged in the barrel- it blows up in your face. : Or it could be that the Chief is really "dead." Like, it was all : just a poetic way of bringing closure to the story, with the Chief's ghost : interacting with Cortana one last time before going into the deep sleep of : cryo... and that planet is a "heaven" of sorts for the Chief... : ***lawls*** : or maybe not. I don't think we ever really found out exactly how the rings : work. There's been SO much speculation, which I think has been some really : good ideas on everyone's part. But I don't think we ever really narrowed : it down. I'm probably wrong.
