In Response To: Re: Sidewinder's back, baby! (sketchfactor) : It does raise the question though.. how would people feel if some "quick : ports" were done at some point in time? Would it be better to have : something that perhaps had less visual upgrades and pizazz but was a : perfect copy of an original? For hypothetical argument's sake, assume that : such a map would be priced differently - As a player I'd expect something : like that to probably cost less than a full blown fancy glorious new map. : So it really comes down to what would people want more? some quick and dirty
I doubt any port Bungie do could be quick and dirty. If I were a designer there, I'd want to at least bring them up to Halo 3's existing standards in the graphics department. Even if that's as simple as just replacing the original textures with similar ones from existing Halo 3 locations (both campaign and multiplayer). Then there are the basic geometry changes to adapt to the Halo 3 differences in player speed, jumping etc, which I think most people agree would be necessary. Add in support for the new Halo 3 gametypes, vehicles, give it a Forge pallet etc, and it is soon far from quick and dirty! Fans are going to keep asking for remakes of classics and it's understandable why. Maybe go for, say, the five most requested maps from the previous two games. (I suppose it depends how many map-packs are in Halo 3's foreseeable future.) Off the top of my head: From Halo 2: Midship, Lockout and a Headlong/Terminal hybrid. And from Halo 1: Of the ones yet to be remade, I'd say Chill Out and Boarding Action, but I don't expect everyone to agree! (I give much less priority to H1 maps that have already been remade in H2 because two versions, one on XBL, seems enough already!) Either release them all as one "Halo Classics" map pack, or spread them out so you have (assuming 3-maps-per-pack like we've seen so far), either 1 new + 2 classic or 2 new + 1 classic in each map pack. Which is pretty much what the Legendary map pack has, so, good one! :-) But anyway, I think (and hope) we won't see any truly "quick and dirty" remakes. I think your standards are way too high for that!
