Hey Marty, whaddya think? | |

In Response To: Option to switch music off (Rockslider) : If you'll forgive me Jman, that's a poor argument against the option to : switch off the music. The key point here is that the user should be : allowed to play in the style they prefer, not always in one particular : style preferred by the powers-that-be at Bungie. If I fancy playing : without music today, it harms nobody and doesn't disrespect Bungie's : efforts. Besides which, the sounds of battle and of the environment have : their own aesthetic appeal. Sometimes I'd play with music (I like it, and : can be heard humming it on a daily basis!), sometimes I'd like things more : austere. The lack of an option to switch music off would merely serve to : reduce the overall amount of enjoyment that I can get from the game. : There's no logic in that - it's needless inflexibility - and I wish Bungie : would finally get around to realizing it. : Ah-ha, you've relented a little by the end of your message! Glad to hear it.
Heh, I wrote up the post, then came to that compromise idea, but decided to keep the rest of the post the way it was for posterity, and in case you might've agreed with me ;) I can only wonder though how easy or hard this is a feature for Bungie to implement, some of the triggers for the music could be hard to track down at the end, hopefully before they incorporate any music into the final game, they will first make sure to record where the music is being played. But then again, I'm not an expert programmer so maybe you can just have a kill switch in a couple lines of code to magically turn off all music from playing :) Although now, I can see that it would be no great loss to Marty, as he records and conceives of many of the games sound effects himself (gun-shots, vehicle noises, atmospheric, miscellaneous) so you can better hear the other work he does. I still support my compromise simply on the basis of the necessity to listen to Marty's music. It would just be a shame to have a new player to the game decide to turn off some "silly music" because he/she doesn't want that "distracting them". I realize this scenario is quite unlikely, but I feel anything that is gotten in a game, through an accomplishment makes it that much more rewarding. i.e. Bungie should defenitely put some secretly cool things in for completing Campaign on Legendary. But simply beating it on any difficulty will accomplish three things that are even more accessable: Gives the player an incentive to complete campaign based on the fact that they're unlocking some cool features. Number two, ensures that any casual person who picks up Halo 3 won't just head for multiplayer (like so many uninformed people probably did in Halo 2) with the knowledge of cool features to unlock. And finally, will give the casual player a feeling of real accomplishment when they complete Campaign (compared to a long-time Halo fan who feels accomplishment by the act of simply completing the campaign). Keep in mind, that my compromise is designed in mind to more casual, and new Halo 3 players, who would gain more from unloackable content. In fact, all this talk about unlockable content is urging me to write a new topic on it....But I digress. I realize you agree, but I just wanted to point out a few more minutiae of this feature. In the end, if Bungie has the time, and hopefully Marty will read this, then this could be implemented. All it needs is some solid programming, and some advertising for "Unlockable Content by beating Campaign" on the back of the Halo 3 box.
