Halo's a life changing game...

In Response To: Is it bad if Halo changed my life? (Dustbunny27)

Everyone's got to have an obsession, with a max of 3. I've said this for years. Most people have a sports obsession, or a porn (!) obsession, or a history obsession, etc. I have a Bungie obsession (among my motorcycle and music obsessions).

I played Myth 2 on my PC almost ten years ago...I liked that game. When I registered at gamewinners.com in November of 2000, I did so because of my former Pokemon obsession. When I heard news of Bungie, the makers of Myth 2, I was all over it, and I soon discovered halo.bungie.org, R.net, and BGH (God, they did a lot of site redesigns back then). I spent tons of time on the GW forums. Those are probably some of the best memories of my life, and I loved the people there: PRAH, Elite, Gameguy117, Opie301, believe it or not (his return to the internet, in May of this year, I think, after 3 years or so of absence btw, made me dance around my room). I lurked around here until about...Octobuary 2002, or so. I soon started becoming active in the real Halo community, and having less and less of a life.

It reached a paramount last year when I was staff over at HIH. I was depressed for a week after being demodded. I was demodded because, frankly, Sorahn was overworked and has to go on he said/she said stories and personal likes and dislikes, but that's not important right now. I realized something: Halo and Bungie, up until this point, WAS MY LIFE. I quickly changed stuff. Sure, I continued with the Halo and stuff, having tons of fun on XBL with n0f, Mintz, Tex, Elite, working with TW on ROP, Halomachinima.com, then Haloportable.com, but it no longer runs my life like it used to.

If you noticed, I didn't mention anything about my life outside of the internet and the Bungie community. I'll tell you why: I didn't have one until literally 10 months ago. I found this girl who I really liked (who was attractive, no less. Bonus! Then we broke up. :(), I made real friends, I bought a motorcycle, and I started doing stand-up.

Now, if I hadn't ever played Halo, it's very likely I'd be on the track team at college or something, have lame friends, not be too into computers, weigh about 50 pounds less, I would have been much less fun, and I would have graduated high school at 15, not 16.

I don't regret a thing. I love Bungie and I love Halo. I love the community. I love the people I've met. Psyrixx and I have made plans to ride our motorcycles places, Elite and I are screwing around this summer in Colorodo, at least five Bungie employees know and talk to me, and then there's the butterfly effect of other things, too numerous to mention.

Moreover, I consider myself a more intelligent, and ultimately, a better balanced individual because of my involvement with the Halo community. What would have happened if I had not had the "Halo Nation" (God, I've never felt as insulted as I did when that term was applied to the collective fanhood) to expand my mind and morals is unthinkable.

It's simply the pivotal point in my life as I've lived it to this point. If asked in an interview what the most important thing that's ever happened to me is (and I'm not married, at this point), I'll likely say 'Halo.' When I'm 76 and chronicling my life so far (doubtlessly, I will write a book on the subject, because I'm going to become rich and famous), there's gonna be an HBO archive style break, likely based on my obsessions, and the one right now is Halo. Chapter 1: Pre-Halo. Chapter 2: Halo. Chapter 3: Socially active years. Chapter 4: Pre-Skav, etc...

In short: Halo is the game. Jason Jones and Alex Seropian have created the video game. It was fun to play and stuff, which garnered it great reviews, but the more important thing is this: it has literally changed the lives of thousands of people, something most United States presidents don't do. This power is the greatest in the world, and Bungie is free to wield it over me.
