In Response To: recoilless rifles... (Tursas)

for every mass unit of gas that exits out the back of the weapon at a given velocity, there is a proportional amount of mass*velocity taken away from the velocity of the projectile. Sure you'll cut down on recoil. You could concievavly fire the bullet at half velocity (the other half is given to the gas exiting the back of the gun) with no recoil whatsoever... but then your pretty much rendering your weapon half as effective, and you'd be better off pepperspraying a full clip at full velocity anyway.

: I was under the impression that recoilles rifles worked on the principal that
: ALL of the gases formed in firing the rifle were allowed to exit the back
: of the gun. The "each action must have an equal and opposite
: reaction" law of motion was satisfied in that the gases leaving the
: gun were the "reaction".

: Only problem was that recoilless rifles never really worked very well due to
: the slow speeds of the projectiles.
