In Response To: Re: To recoil, or not to recoil.. (Xero) : I think the major problem with "recoil" that makes it so lame is
Past bungie games (Marathon, etc) had what was called a 'theta error'. Basically, some weapons were more accurate (less theta), some less (more theta). The assault rifle had a pretty high theta, and spraying at someone 30-40 feet away was pretty pointless... but a competent pistolero could do serious damage at range (no one-hit kills, more like 4-6). This wasn't terribly realistic (aimed rifle will be more accurate at longer range than aimed pistol with shooters of comparable skill), but was explained in-game by a terminal describing how the MA-75 Assault rifle was a crappy design procured by a corrupt government (or something like that). It was still useful point-blank. As far as the 'realism' of recoil goes, does "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction" sound familiar? Until we find a way around that, recoil will be with us. And if you think it's unrealistic, head down to the range and see how recoil works in real life. It'll give you a whole new perspective on the 'realism' of 1pp shooters.... |
