In Response To: The Grunts and their rebellion (Graeme)
: Hi gang, new to the HALO world, long time fan of the Bungie stuff. Long live
: Durandal.
: I was thinking the other day, while reading through the story page, and
: talking with some friends, that the Grunt rebellion might have been more
: than everyone seems to think. Sure, the Grunts are tiny useless cowards
: now--but maybe that's because they were otherwise untenable?
: See, in thinking about the Prophets, and their many ways of
: subjugation--through coercion, conquest or other means we might not even
: know, why wouldn't it include some type of genetic modification or in-bred
: addiction to a drug? Anyone ever wonder why they're the only covies who
: wear rebreathers? I found it interesting to note that the 'heretic' Grunts
: still had the masks, but instead of the typical hermit-crab shells they
: wore, it appeared as though they were simply wearing two atmospheric tanks
: of some sort.
: Imagine, if you will, a swarm of...let's say 10 grunts. Grunts who are
: fearless, who don't worry about dying when they see the guy next to them
: die. What would happen if you couldn't scare the weapon off of them just
: by saying "boo" when there are countless other guards around?
: They'd be a whole lot more powerful than they are now, that's what. So
: what if they are the way they are because they once rebelled?
: Once, they held a position not unlike that of the Elites--a powerful warrior
: race, not by strength of muscles, or by warrior skill, but by strength of
: numbers! They decided, one day, that their numbers alone were stronger
: than that of the entire covenant. Rising up against those who would claim
: to be their betters, only to be put down by an Arbiter of the prophets.
: Would you leave such a powerful enemy lying at your back? I know I
: wouldn't. So now, the Grunts are weakened, pitiful, afraid.
: Just a thought that ran through my head the other day. So what do you
: think--holes the size of swiss cheeze, or Mack Trucks [in that little
: tale]? It's too late for me to really decide. I leave it in your most
: capable hands.
As far as drug dependancy, Grunts come from a planet with a methane atmosphere, but you could argue that the Prophets also hold that over them. Sort of "we control your planet, and if you don't obey, we destroy the rebreathing tech we've given you and force you to exist on a planet we control."
