If you remember from The Flood, the AI Wellsley imagined himself to be the real general Wellsley. It doesn't surprise me that Enkidu would think the same of himself. What is surprising is that he didn't before and now he does. Perhaps you're right--he may have been merely a ship's AI, and now, infused with knowledge, he has become a "smart," or rampant, AI.
