I think favorites and a buddy list should have been "no-brainer" features from the beginning, since most mature FPS games out there have them. I hope this is addressed soon. My problem, as I've noted, involves the ability of Halo to recognize its own disk. The problem existed before the patch but the patch exacerbated it to the point that I can now only play in safe mode most of the time now (I somehow managed regular mode ONCE). That brings me to one of my gripes: no chat in safe mode. Why? I can understand reduction of resolution, graphic features, sound, etc, but chat elimination??? I don't get it. Now people I play with will think I'm even MORE of a jerk for not responding to them! *sigh* Now, I realize Microsoft is probably not 100% to blame for my cd-compatibility issue; odds are the DVD player may be partially at fault. I'm betting the player is at one side of tolerance and the cd is at the other. This is not a new problem; I remember making floppies on one PC that couldn't be read by another-- using the same brand and model of floppy drive! But here's the kicker: I used to have problems with a variety of CDs, until applying the latest firmware upgrade to my Lite-On combo drive. Now I *consistently* experience trouble Microsoft-produced CDs exclusively. Even *if* the drive is to the far side of tolerance, it's still able to easily read other CDs. So what is Microsoft doing different??? : I've been really thinking about the HPC situation over the last few days, and : these are my thoughts. : On the one hand, I sympathize with Gearbox. They've got some pretty big shoes : to fill in order to live up to the standard that Halo for the Xbox has : set, and their hands are tied -- everything they do has to be approved of : by Microsoft, then sent through extensive testing before it can be : released. They can't just produce a patch and release it the same day, so : they've got to make a lot of broad sweeping changes all at once and this : no doubt amplifies any complaints that people have. : On the other hand, I'm disappointed with some of the decisions Gearbox has : made since Halo PC's release. They haven't implemented many of the : features that people have requested, and some of the features that they : have implemented don't appear to have been very well-thought out. : Take the teamkilling solution, for instance -- I can't undestand how this is : superior to a simple vote-kick option. The fact that teamkilling rules can : only be set on a per-server basis and not on a per-game basis is also : disappointing. : Another complaint of mine is the lack of a "favorite servers" list. : Having to browse through dozens of pages of servers to find the one I'm : looking for is just silly. Obviously Gearbox can't implement everything at : once, but I would certainly have preferred a favorites list to the : "persistent teams" feature they added in 1.03. : The persistent teams thing is the only feature that I can't understand at : all. I don't think I've ever heard anyone have any complaints about the : randomized teams of the earlier versions. I don't think persistent teams : is necessarily a bad idea, but why on earth is it PERMANENT instead of a : configurable option? : As I was playing tonight, though, I realized something: even with the several : complaints I have about HPC, I still really enjoy playing it. In the end : it's still a fun game, and that makes it (for me, at least) easier to : forgive some of the issues that it has. If it were any game but Halo, : however, I don't think I'd be quite so forgiving. : I think that Gearbox is really at a crucial point right now. Obviously a lot : of people aren't happy with the changes in 1.03, but it doesn't seem like : many of them are so dissatisfied as to give up on Halo PC at this point. : But all of these people are going to be anxiously awaiting the release of : the next patch, and I think that this next patch is going to be what makes : it or breaks it for many of them. It seems to me that Gearbox is going to : have to really "make things right" in the next patch or they're : going to lose a LOT of their users.
