Advertising works. The main reason is so people KNOW you exist.

90% know? Sure, but 10% don't even know anything about Halo 2. Those 10% you'd likely get to through TV. Thus, advertising.

Then there are people who might need to save up for Halo 2, such as younger kids.

It all goes towards being good for as long as possible, and mediocre for even longer. If you're just mediocre in sales, then you never get anywhere close to where you want to be.
