Here's the deal on validity

In Response To: 2 New Eggs (c0ld vengeance)

Okay, to start with, for all the people mad at c0ld for hacking Halo and then posting the results: he started by mailing these privately to me. I ran them by SketchFactor, who ran them by the Halo team... who said go for it.

So c0ld is covered by a blessing from on high.

More relevant, though, is the ethical issue: is it okay to show eggs that were found by cheating?

For the most part, no. Up to now, we haven't accepted any submissions for material that was obtained via hacking - because it's pretty unsporting. In this particular case, though...

Let's look, for example, at the Engine Temp Critical graphic.

c0ld extracted the actual graphic - which is never seen, in that form, in the game. (It's displayed, covered by a reflecting grid surface, inside the final longsword.) The picture below is extracted from a DVD version of the final cutscene; this is better quality than you'll get in-game (except for the compression artifacts I introduced by converting it to a jpeg):

Now, Frogblast has shown that you can get inside the Longsword... but you can't do it with a sniper rifle, because there aren't any on that level. So the best zoom you're gonna get is 2x. And the egg portion of that graphic is simply too obscured by the overlayed image to actually READ at that resolution.

So there is simply NO WAY to see that egg ingame. Period.

Likewise, the helmet chip is never visible ingame; it's ONLY in the cutscene, and then not at any resolution you can extract words from. The ONLY way to read the chip is via c0ld's method.

So: we'll accept eggs discovered via this method - with the stipulation that they MUST BE UNVIEWABLE IN-GAME. c0ld's three finds meet that requirement.

I hope this clarifies HBO's position on this - and reassures people that eggs that are findable will only be included in our Eggs database WHEN THEY ARE FOUND IN-GAME.
