I'm leaning more and more toward the former. Just found this post a few hundred posts down:

So unless this was a deliberate attempt to fool us into thinking that Nick's (and my) findings are irrelevent to this puzzle, I don't think this has any importance outside of the "interesting to know" realm :-)
