OK, first off, all languages are "seething with error and patternless, scattershot confusion." For instance, there is no rhyme or reason to why most nouns are assigned masculine, feminine or neuter gender in the languages that do so.

English has managed to do away with a lot of relatively unnecessary vocabulary in favor of syntactic structures. We don't need nominative, genetive, dative, subjunctive or any of those other cases for nouns -- why decline a noun when you can get the proper meaning from sentence structure? (To be accurate, we do still decline pronouns: I, me, my; he, him, his; etc.) Why should a table, a tree or a car need a gender?

Maybe it's a little tougher for those who come from languages where the vocabulary carries all that meaning... but in the end, it's simpler, isn't it?
