It turns out that the image specifically says: "The Marine does not become Rampant in its new form. It becomes human again."
It also talks about detonating nuclear weapons, though, so I don't think the image is trying to cast the Converted Marine as a good guy; an edgy anti-hero at best. It seems like he wants revenge on the AIs for "controlling" him. (Pronouns seem to be inconsistent.) Which sounds like Angry Rampancy to me, so maybe it's a case of this.
Early in learning the lore I thought of the player as pretty morally ambiguous. Omitting the arguments, but I think I could buy a timeline where he was the villain. (Like I thought Red was when I first played it.)
(Passing daydream: a scenario set in the Vylae system, when it gets invaded and Leela's like "fine, guess I gotta help you wriggly bastards".)
