No, it is health. they couldn't make a health/shield system that Halo had back then so they gave you three health bars with the upper two representing your shield and you had to use your imagination. they did the same in Destiny, but you healed on your own and the shields also recharged.

The smack N die with a crystal spear applies to the BoBs because they are fully human. MJ is not so it is logical to assume he doesn't die as quickly as the Bobs when hit by Pfhor weapons.
