I favor the idea that the molten elements are part of a coolant system. Liquid metals and molten salts are used for cooling superheated nuclear (and other) energy/ heat sources. In space, the Marathon would properly have radiative cooling systems outside that moon. Inside, the coolant picks up waste heat which is created due to all ship and human activity. Due to the moon's mass, there is enough gravity to allow the player and NPCs to walk/ run (but not jump?) and to allow liquids to stay put in open containers and channels.

If you look at images of the ISS, most of the panel arrays are at least in part heat radiators; not just solar panels.
