Ack! this isn't fixed in M1A1. The door stays open, it must be set to one shot. Damn. Another thing to add to... The List.
You're right though. In the original game it's a suicide trap if you're not quick enough. Strangely (then perhaps not) the Spoiler Guide makes no reference to the fact that door will close behind you sealing you in if you are not quick enough.
Note that you don't have to 'hit an unmarked wall'. The trigger poly is the area in front of the teleporter. You just have to step on it.
