It allows you to keep the weapon in your hand while reloading with two pistols with the worry of accidentally firing the trigger. Using your middle finger inside that second trigger-gaurd, you free up your index finger, that when coupled with your thumb, you can now use to grab and insert magazines. In fact, this is the same reason why the Halo 2 pistol has a bigger trigger gaurd. Duel-wielding reloading.

This is coming from a soldier that has fired and tried to reload duel pistols. It's hard. ;)
