If you don't mind teasing apart individual strands of wire and using a soldering iron, it's possible to splice things back together yourself unless the break is right at the plug, which is unfortunately quite likely.
There are actually a number of 3rd party PB chargers on the market, some of which can even be purchased from the Apple Store. They're not much cheaper, but some are considerably more durable. I have a Kensington model myself which I use for travels - it works off AC, DC and even on some airplanes, but you have to wait a few minutes when charging a depleated battery before the PB will wake from sleep.
Another possibility is to find someone with an old Apple charger - the yoyo design works fine in newer models, too - it just lacks the light indicator on the plug.
