In Response To: Re: Eternal Volunteers: BabylonVII (Steve Levinson)

: The biggest complaint I have with this level is also the lack of direction -
: the player literally has no idea what they need to do other that what
: "Lela" told them on the last level, and who can remember what
: the heck she told us to do after the battle we just came through? I put
: Lele'a name in quotes more because of something we'll learn on the next
: level but, suffice it to say that it's not at all clear who really sent
: you that message.

Muahahahah!

: In any case, we're to head to a waste disposal facility
: (ala Septic Exodus in Evil) and use that facility's waste transporter to
: escape.

Actually I intended it to be more of a garbage disposal than a sewer. I was thinking industrial waste, mining waste, etc...

: Inside we find 4 sets of circuts, each with 3 circuits that must be
: destroyed. Strange that the teleporters could work at all after doing
: this, but who knows.

I'm thinking perhaps some switches and an uplink might be appropriate, maybe with a few smashed wires in the process.

: I had a hell of a time figuring out how I was supposed to leave the level.
: The one and only terminal didn't work. Going back out into the sludge
: (this is a waste transporter, after all) didn't work, either. It was only
: after I managed to just stand in the center to try to think what I could
: try next that I was transported out. Forrest, here's a suggestion. Have
: sludge entering that central area from the outside in a steady flow. Have
: the floor under the sludge give off a pulsating glow, and have there be a
: gurgling noise to give the impression that sludge is continuously being
: transported out. When each pod's circuits are smashed, sludge from that
: direction would cease to flow and when all are smashed, the sludge level
: would drop, leaving that glowing floor exposed. The player could probably
: then figure it out, and the overall effect would be cool.

Something has been bothering me about this story-wise, that may help clear up the mission objectives too. Why would an advanced race like the Jjaro be transporting their waste into space, like a giant, space... dump, or something? Wouldn't they recycle? I think a much better plot mechanism would be a resource transporter, used to get large, heavy resources into orbit - maybe say this was a mining world, too. It certainly looks like it outside. The player then needs only to activate it and give it a command program from "Leela" to exit.

This would also close up the plot hole (getting ahead a bit here) of how Leela had to "maneuver quick to intercept your transport beam" on a ship that hadn't had its engines or other major systems activated yet... and also how she would see such a transport beam and move faster than it. Instead, she just sees you beam into space in orbit, and beams you onto her ship. Would also make the spurious nature of this escape a little more apparent, I think, to beam into empty space first and THEN onto a ship... but that's for tomorrow.
