From a usability perspective I'd be tempted to have a mode that just filters to connected polygons that intersect the player's current elevation. That'd be similar to the elevation filter you can apply to the SVG maps (aside from the "connected" part) by locking the sliders, selecting "Intersection", clicking the "Player" button, and then dragging the sliders around. You can still get overlap in the case of 5D space, but it'd be useful on maps like By Committee.
