Funny, I didn't think you had to shoot/punch those lights to get through – I just do that because they're there and why not!

Yeah, I think I may have done that the first time I played this map. Very annoying indeed.

Yup. In fact, it's one of my favorites for the early game, with a few notable exceptions (like the door at the very start). This level was more of a dark set-piece seemingly designed to introduce Troopers in as annoying a way as possible.
