More openly in that Ryu'toth directly showed himself to the humans (in the back story), at least. (My guess is that his team--assuming he had one--was so far away that by the time they reached Earth, it'd be lost. I'm not sure what reason Bungie had in mind, assuming it wasn't implied/stated somewhere and I forgot)
