yes, that trick is useful with the grenade launcher, especially on who else wants some.

my strategy is to guzzle a bubbling red potion to deal with the ghasts - the extra time makes all the difference. I also use a bubbling red for the greater nightmares. I use a pale violet potion for the venomous skitters - I find that the 'invincibility shield' is strong enough to get me through that wave without the trouble of being poisoned (it's important to drink it the moment you appear in the room, before their shots hit you). if you collected all the potions from the Hole, you should have enough to go around.
