In Response To: Possible Ne Cede Malis name origin (Blake37)

: I was wiki browsing tonight and happened upon the page for The Bronx. Turns
: out that the official motto of The Bronx is Ne Cede Malis. Double Aught
: was based in Brooklyn, so there could be a connection. I don't remember
: ever seeing this pointed out before, so I thought I would!

: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bronx Scroll down a little and it's
: under the flag, above the map.

Interesting find.

However, we have from the horse's mouth "so to speak" the following origin:

The first level of Infinity was designed by Randy, but the name comes from a mystical ring that has been in Greg's family for years. The ring
has a picture of an elephant with a snake coiled around its trunk and an inscription that reads 'Ne Cede Malis', which means roughly: Don't Give in to Misfortune. This level was one of the last designed, and was meant to evoke M1--claustrophobic hallways, dark corners, and atmosphere. We thought the title was appropriate considering the game begins with a nova, destruction, and the end of Lh'owon.

So its use as the official motto of The Bronx is a coincidence rather than a "name origin".

Indeed, if anyone was to look further into the Latin phrase 'Ne Cede Malis' you would find it used for a whole range of things.

Cheers
Hamish
