In Response To: Re: Tour of Duty: Where are monsters in dreams (VikingBoyBilly)

: That's some great analysis on the terminals.

Thanks! They're some of my favorites, so I like to give them a lot of thought.

: There's almost no doubt in my mind that these are more Gheritt White
: memories, but Durandal's mind getting mixed in there is a thing I never
: thought to consider. It holds some credence, because the Gheritt White
: term in M1 wasn't in a dream. It was a message from... something other
: than the player. The most probable source is Durandal (with Leela being
: non-rampant, Tycho offline, and what kind of sick human would write that
: other than Greg K. or Jason Jones?). Therein the thing to consider is...
: how would Durandal know this?

: TL;DR: There's a theory that Durandal and Tycho are split reboots of Traxus
: IV and the security officer was one of the battleroids used to shut down
: the rampant AI and tested in that battle on the two asteroids, which would
: explain why hearing Durandal's banter and stepping into the Marathon's
: staging area felt familiar, as if from an old dream. (the line could
: also be taken as a vague recollection of PiD, if you subscribe to the
: theory that Security Officer = PiD soldier)

I am definitely a subscriber to the theory that Durandal and Tycho are either reboots of Traxus IV or were among the other AI on the Martian Net that he infiltrated, which would indeed explain how, if the Gheritt White terminal is part of the security officer's memories, Durandal might be able to access them (and of course, later on he also seems to be familiar with what your father told you when you were a kid). Either he knew you personally on Mars or he was able to steal your records, both seem pretty plausible. I'm less convinced by the PiD soldier = Security Officer thing, personally, but mostly on a logistics level - pretty sure that guy's corpse would be dust by the time the technology for battleroids came around. Though I do think that the security officer is one of the battleroids from the Icarus/Thermopylae war, who then got stuck in stasis until being smuggled onto the Marathon. (Spiritually, however, I can see the PiD soldier connection. Maybe reincarnation's a thing in the Marathon universe? In which case that poor bastard must have really screwed up in some life previous to both of these...)

: From this we can draw theories that the player and previous versions of the
: AIs have had a working relationship pre-M1, even so far as taking orders
: for mass genocide. The first time I read Durandal and Tycho's conversation
: on Low Flying Defense Drones, I thought Tycho was referring to the
: asteroid slaughter he just described when he told Durandal the humans that
: were killed deserved vengeance (and doesn't it make sense to conclude that
: the player must be one of these powerful cyborgs he described to explain
: why you're such a badass, else why would backstory like that even be
: presented in the game's narrative?).

I always thought that conversation referred to the slaughter on the Marathon myself, which is certainly the more immediate crime - plus we don't know that AI were involved in the asteroid war at all, only the battleroids. I suppose the Martian AI could have been used to control the battleroids from afar, but that seems like a bit of an awkward distance - you'd think that if the asteroids were big enough to have battleroid factories, they wouldn't have to outsource control centers or whatever they used. (No dispute as to the security officer's nature, though. A 99.9% certainty regarding the player's cyborg-ness is good enough for me!)

: ANYWAY, I'm going to quit beating around the bush here and just come out and
: say that I believe the player (Gheritt white??) made those de-limbed
: corpses on hangar 96 and it's one of his memories from the asteroid battle
: when he was tested. Since he got implanted memories of a life on Mars when
: he got smuggled into the Marathon, Durandal (or Robert Strauss?) was able
: to harvest his suppressed memories and they exist as obscure data packets
: in the deepest recesses of Durandal's hard drive (if technology in the
: 2300s even use such things) and the player's amnesiac mind has those
: memories rendered down to faintly familiar dreams he can't even fully
: recall, and I just wasted this huge analysis on a comment instead of
: saving it for my Eat The Path write up.

I don't consider it a waste at all! I hadn't considered it from that angle before, it's definitely a very interesting theory, so I hope you'll bring it up again and elaborate on it more when "Eat the Path" comes up. I'd really love for the dream level terminals to have their own speculation page so all of these theories could be easily perused - not that I'm hinting in the webmaster's general direction or anything... ¬_¬ Also sorry it took a while for me to reply, I got a bit distracted re-reading the Durandal pages.
