I've only ever seen those Jugs patrol their own areas .Once activate, they simply move up and down a prescribed path. I am assuming this 'patrol' behaviour prevents a Jug from wandering off.

While you can kill both Jugs from the other end you have to launch yourself up over a lava ledge to get to the area with the secret terminal room.

The more I think about it a platform in the lava makes no sense which is why it was probably removed. Greg just never removed the trigger poly.
