Indeed. The trick on M1A1 was to stand a short ways back from the entrance to the large room (it seems you really had to be standing right next to the entrance to activate the enemies down below) - in doing so, you avoid activating the enemies. From there, you can just blast the tightly-packed groups of Pfhor from a distance with your trusty Rocket Launcher. I'm not sure if this actually could work in beta 2, but I think it did in beta 1.
