The old Marathon betas story

Every good story has a beginning, middle and end.
Last week, defor reminded us of the beginning of the Marathon betas story. Some (evil king, prince, tech support guy…) hid them on the Marathon CD (boo hiss). Nobody could find them and nobody could play.
Now we all know how this story ends. Our hero leaves them on the Marathon Trilogy CD for everyone to play (hurrah). Well everyone, except those that didn't buy the Trilogy CD (boo hoo).
But wait what about the middle of the story?
Could the middle have been where everyone got free Marathon betas handed out to them... or is that too much of a fantasy story?
